Metal Militia - The Real Story Behind The Greatest Heavy Metal Band in The World

In 1980 in a small town of Muar in the state of Johor in the land once known as the ‘Gold Peninsula’ (and I think still is by Indons,Filipinos…) Malaysia, Lan Uteh at the age of 22 influenced by the underground sound of The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal records owned by his father, decided to form a band. Not knowing that it was the decision that turned and changed the rest of his life on this beautiful earth and it’s population completely.

The first step was to find his band mates to be. Since drumming is his love and ability, he needs to find a vocalist, guitarist and a bassist to complete his ambition. His best buddy in school, Jeman (real name Azman Saibon) volunteered to be the vocalist and also take the part of rhythm guitar , since in his own words, “a vocalist should be the handsomest guy and that’s me, and, I can play all the Sweet Charity songs better than anyone in our kampung...”. So Lan could not argue with that, and that’s how Jeman became the lead vocal and rhythm guitar for this legendary band.
Searching for a bass player was very tough since everybody wants to be a guitarist and hardly anybody owns a bass guitar at that period of time. So the search goes on up to the town of Jasin in Melaka where they found the one bass player they needed so much. Songeh bin Paeng ( real name, no kidding!) sealed the part of the bottom end of the band with his extreme bass pounding. Since they were in Melaka they continued the search for the last member, the lead guitarist. Songeh knew a guy who could play the guitar like the devil and introduced them to Kassim Hameed (son of the chains of Hameed Restaurants owner).
So within two weeks the band is completed. The only thing is they need a name. A band name that could sticks like glue in the minds of millions of their future fans. A name when mentioned will automatically struck the mind to a great heavy metal band. The greatest if it may be. They squeezed and cracked their brains looking for that name for two days and come out with the following; Longkang Tersumbats, Rambutans, Budak Kacamata, Pistol dan Bunga Rose, The Songkoks and many more (not including The Songeh suggested by Songeh of course, which is discarded of the list in unanimous votes by all the other three). Lastly they were to pick either from this two name, Muar or Melaka taking from where they came from. Lan loses as the other three voted for Melaka coz Songeh and Kassim were from there and although Jeman lives in Muar, his mother is of Nyonya and Baba descendant from Melaka. So it was settled, the band is “Melaka” with four members aiming to be the heaviest shit in town.
The rest is history or is it? That’s not how the story goes. The band played and toured the country with its vicious new sound of heavy music and got the attention of music producer and talent scout, Mr. Ahmed Nawab. Taking the band to another level was his intention seeing their surprising and unique talents. The first step was to put the band into a test or competition. The band was enrolled in “Akademia Fantasi”, a hot local reality tv music competition. What happened was the band got massive and huge followers being in the show that launched their career in the music industry.
Ahmed got them signed to an international music label, Batigol Records. Well, with all international label and production, the band received a complete makeover. The image consultant for the band, Mama Juwuu changed their name and also the band name which is from that day onwards known as “Metallica” formerly known as “Melaka” with Lars Ulrich f.k.a Lan Uteh on drums, James Hetfeild f.k.a Jeman @ Azman Saibon as vocalist and rythm guitar, Kirk Hammett f.k.a Kassim Hameed on lead guitar and lastly Jason Newsted f.k.a Songeh Paiseh (his names was totally a plastic surgery..hehe..if you know what I mean, they settled on Jason taking Jasin, Melaka where he lives).
And that’s it, how the real story goes on the making of the greatest heavy metal band in the world with thousands of arena and stadium filled crazy crowds and also sold millions of records around the world, and the history is not finished yet…
