Off Music Channels, Relevancy and Its End

Out of everything thats on the tube at the moment, none is more out tune in a way than the so called music channels. It used to be that the meaning of MTV was Music Television, but now its more crap than anything. Just like how the radio is now overpopulated by the same old generic songs over and over again, and advertisements that seems more like the main theme of the entire programme, the music channel on tv have been overpopulated by the same generic song and their eagerness to show "reality tv" shows.

The first ever video that came out on MTV in the states was "video killed the radio store" which is ironic today. The music video channels now are killing themselves and not by the influence of the internet. Though I am not entirely overlooking the part the internet played in the demise of the music channels, but thats another story altogether. Everytime you do watch such channels all you will see is either the two I have been mentioning earlier. Where is the creative input the channel have offered for the last decade? During the primetime slots on these channels you will find it to be filled with reality shows that, although is meant for the teen to young adult viewers which are the target market for these channels, has nothing to do with being a music channel what so ever.

Some might say they need to keep things fresh and relevant; and to diversify, but all it does is lose the plot for the channels. These channels need to show music that will inspire people creatively. If you were to ever read / listen to what inspires this generation artiste there will always be that one music video that have inspired them. One or two (and probably more) artist were inspired by those epical music video by Michael Jackson for example. Bands and singers used to get recognition through music channels. What is the relevence on showing shows like "My Sweet Sixteen", "The Hills", "Parental Control", "Keys to the VIP", to name a few, on music channels? They should be on other channels. It seems that with the end of Total Request Live or more affectionately called TRL, ended the influence of music channels on the industry.

I applaud Channel V's efforts on trying to bring the asian music industry forward by shows like amp, but I dont think this is enough. Plus they show the same thing over and over again. Breaking into the industry and having staying power is hard enough as it is and when shows other than music comes into the picture it just makes it harder and that is why more and more of them go on the web. When there is so much to look out for on the web one could forget their own countries industry and opt for those outside their own. It makes local artist even harder to break through. Although one would argue that there is an influx of quality bands emerging from the internet, it could be damaging since it makes it easier for piracy.

These music channels now are less seen as more and more reality shows are shown. Bring back the times when we would be excited everytime theres a new video shown on the channel. Bring back the freshness and creativity these channels has to offer. Relevance is key.
