Alter Ego and Online Community

Author's note: My own blog is currently down undergoing technical overhaul, but my mind can't stop thinking and the feeling of writing is overwhelming - thus, this post. Just wanted to share with you here, and since I feel it's better to be expressed in English, here goes. Again, this post is supposedly be fun. :D

If I were to ask you - what is your alter ego; can you answer it?

I've been joining communities and networks since my university time. I think I'm blessed to be able to experience two most biggest network forum at my university - Grapevine and Kampung5 (K5), where we got to mingle around virtually, from the most junior to the most senior; sharing ideas and opinions, changing and debating various issues and stuffs. I've made mistakes, I've learnt bunch of stuffs, and I've observed a lot.

Kapasitor.net is my third community I've been involved actively. No, I'm not trying to brag whatsoever, just wanted to share with all of you my observation and interpretation of what people can be when being online. Their alter ego.

Being online have one biggest advantage; you can be anonymous. And with that privileges, people tends to show their alter ego over time, and this is what I'm trying to share for fun. This post is not intending to mock anybody, so if any of you fell offended, I apologized from the start.

The Angel: The good, who follow the Books, stand by the good virtue, and condemn all the deadly sin. Loves beauty, but their interpretation of beauty is strictly by the rules. Red rose is beauty; red mountain lava is not. Those are their accepted point of view and creativity. Always argued with the devils, but their tolerant virtue never fades. Sometimes they make ways for the devil as long as the devil doesn't go overboard.

The Burning Angel: Angels who have only one deadly sin; pride. Due to the fanaticism to the angels interpretation of rules and beauty, they develop a 'holier than thou' attitude, which always burned them - making them saying NO diligently everytime something else is different from the rules. Sometimes, the burning angel got burnt so much they turned into developing sarcasm and shouting. They chant the verse from the Books without giving out any explanation or revelation.

The Fallen Angel: Angels who have run out of blessings. When an angel got burnt, it's either they extinguish the flame of the devil, or they fall out of grace. Once they fall out of grace, it's either die/leave, or they turned to be the devil. It's rare to find a fallen angel who turned to the devil, so usually, they die.

The Devil: Rebellious, different, do not want to play by the Books. These are peoples who have different point of view, always have different perspective, and usually arguing with the angel. While they're creative, their creativity are not always accepted, especially by the angels. However, the devil can accept the rules of the book, if it can be twisted for their own advantages.

The Devil Advocates: Trickery, and love to play into the devil's game. These are peoples who like to feed the troll, flame the fire, lure other peoples into involving on the dark side. These are peoples who can appreciate the devil's way of creativity, and also laugh when seeing angels getting burned by their own flame. They also have characteristics of devil himself, making their creativity is not by the Books, but not subtle at all, too.

The Frozen Devil: If angel can fall out of grace, devil can froze, too. By the cool breeze of the angel, they tend to develop interests in the Books, and started to follow the Books, bit by bit. They still have the trickery on their sleeves, so in most cases, they turned to be the devil advocates again. It's rare to find a frozen devil who become angels, but it is not impossible.

The Books here only mean rules, which usually being set by the owner or moderators of the online community. Also, worth to note; people change, so they might be able to play two or more "characters"/"alter ego", or they might change from one to another.
