From My Desk: One Night At The Call Center

some people say 'money is everything'. some say that only poor people say that you do not need money for happiness when money is clearly everything.

this story started on a train when the writer was heading to a place to give a lecture. he was unable to sleep and the person sharing his compartment actually told a story of one night that changed the lives of six people working in a call center.

they had to assume a name that is familiar to the ears of people living in the US and answer questions regarding appliances the customers purchase from a certain shops. the money was good but where is the happiness when you have to stand racism and people screaming into your ears day after day. i totally get it, being a customer service representative takes a lot. patience, perseverance and more patience.

the people working there weren't happy. the pay is good but Vroom wants to make a change in the world,Radhika was struggling with her marriage, Military Uncle was trying to repair his relationship with his son, Priyanka needs to take control of her life, Shryam needs to improve his self-confidence while Esha is trying to be a model. they have their own problems and added to these all is the fact that the close center needs to be brought to 'rightsize' due to management problem.

it all takes one night to rectify everything; from turning their company to revenue-making entity, from Esha swimming in guilt, Priyanka having to say yes constantly to her mum, Vroom trying to make a change, Military uncle with his inflated ego, Radhika with her constant dependency on anti-depressant and Shryam to his severe case of no confidence. they somehow ended in a very tricky situation and their lives literally hangs on a thread and they received a call that was more to a call to their hearts.

that one call dug what was truly in their heart. it doesn't take much and their life was never the same again after that.

i thought this story was about a bunch of people telling their stories in one night but it was actually more to that. it tells about going for your dream, stand up for your right, believe in yourself and essentially 'money is not everything despite the fact that everything needs money'.

personally, its my favorite because it does not give a straight bookish, rule-by-rule ways to be happy. it's a story to inspire.
