Akashah's Touch in "Sayap-sayap Cinta"

For want of a more diversified reading collection, I decided to reunite with Malay novels. And Ahadiat Akashah was at the top of my list, a result of his much talked about Lagenda Budak Setan.

I must say, reading his novel Sayap-sayap Cinta has rectified the flawed perception I once had towards Malay novels. You see, I did invest (with my dad's money, unfortunately) a certain amount in "novel Melayu" and more often than not, I was let down. Most of the materials were either cliche or written in dull words.

My negative judgment of such novels persisted until the moment I was halfway through Sayap-sayap Cinta. Ahadiat Akashah is now officially my favorite Malay author. It's good to be able to have preferance for both Malay and English materials.

The novel did not exactly have the most unique story line but somehow Akashah managed to inject the "wow" factor. The story follows the tormented romance of a married couple. It's the wings of affection which carry the love story of Melati and Ridhuan.

Melati's past comes uninvited in the midts of her steady marriage with Ridhuan. A man from her yesterdays destroys her paradise in the blink of an eye. The news he brings trashes Melati in the eyes of her husband and the beautiful life is stolen from her right away. Despite Melati's confusion of her past, she's left with no choice but to bow to fate.

I for one, admire the journey Akashah takes his readers on and that ride glides within Melati's and Ridhuan's lives after the awful news. There's no better way to illustrate how I feel about this novel than to simply share how I felt WHEN I was reading it.

There were moments when I felt like I wanted to take control over the plot just so the protagonists could be spared the misery. Initially, I wasn't quite fond of the early reveal of who's behind the evil deed. However, as I went on reading, I figured the story isn't about finding out who did the crime. It's about how the heroes survive the mess and that's the journey I was referring to.

At the end of the novel, I couldn't help but succumb to my emotions. It may not have been major but regardless, the fact that the story managed to yield such reaction justifies my testimony.

Sayap-sayap Cinta
is definitely worth reading. The only way for you to find out what is Melati's past and how does it tarnish the palace of love built by Melati and Ridhuan is to read the book. Believe me, it wouldn't be a chore. You'd love it!

I am now reading Lagenda Budak Setan. I'm not even halfway through but am enjoying it already.

Thumbs up to Ahadiat Akashah!
