Friendship over food ?

Restaurant : Shrimpz

Where : Langkawi

One of my favorite things to do would be to bring friends to good eatery places and take pride when they enjoyed the food. I don’t even know why I feel such way but I enjoyed it.

Recently I was send to Langkawi by my company for a meeting. Together with me is a colleague who has more knowledge on technical aspect of our products to support me. Have been to a couple of island in Malaysia before, I am not really keen with Langkawi as I couldn’t find anything entertaining there, but for my colleague this is his first time and he is rather excited. So I just play along.

Ergo, to spice up the experience for him, I do what I do best while traveling. Let go for “makan”. I took advantage of the locals hospitality and friendliness to scout for good restaurant and feedback given was that Langkawi has good fresh seafood. Great, I always love seafood but the only issues was that most are served in “thai” style. The same style you can get in KL. Mundane, but never mind. Lets give it a try (On personal note – I always opt for local dishes that can’t or hardly found in KL when I am traveling. I just love the experience of tasting the new food)

After gathering some information from the locals (which is the tour agent and he might have been instructed to give me such info by the owner of the restaurant). We drove our rented “Wira” to the restaurant which is located in between Pantai Chenang and Pekan Kuah. It was drizzling at that time and Langakwi are rather quiet at the moment. Not many tourists around. The restaurant name is Shrimpz, taking name from the prawn harvesting pond they have at the side of the restaurant. No one was around at the time we reached the restaurant, partly maybe because it was drizzling but we were amazed. The views are spectucalar. Great design. The restaurant consist of small hut / cabbana made of rattan , woods and nipah roof (what is atap nipah in English ? ) We immediately fall in love with the scenery. Like usual, acting like tourists we take the opportunity to snap some picture. The results (the picture I mean) was quite dramatic. The lighting and ambience is really awesome. They have a good sounds system as well playing soothing instrumental / Jazz music. Something that is quite rare for a malay / thai food restaurant. There is a bit feeling of exclusivity but good enough that they didn’t go to hard for it. It definitely wont intimidate and chase away some customer with the thought of high price tag. It is just nice to attract people to come in.

When we were shown the menu, we were invited to have a look at the fish and prawn aquarium to choose the live fish and prawn. Of course the price is according to the size. The waitress is friendly and informative. She took the liberty to explained the menu and persuade us to ordered as much as possible. I would say she is good in promoting the restaurant. All in all (with the help of her persuasion) we ordered four dishes. Thai style Siakap steam, Black Papper Prawn, Kailan Ikan Masin and their best selling home made Tomyam. Honestly, I am not very keen with tomyam but her description sounds so appealing. In less than one minutes after the waitress left we were served with our drinks and I was shock for their speed and in less than five minutes they have already served all our food. Great, it means they have a few chefs working in the restaurant ensuring quick delivery and the food are not over cooked. This is good for taste preservation. I must say that the presentations of the food are as good as the presentation of the restaurant in whole. Eye catching.

First thing that I tried would be the tomyam. First thing that I noticed would be the contents of the tomyam. Full of ingredient such as squid, prawn, chicken and beef unlike tomyam in KL where most of the time have only two prawns, some squids and shred of chicken and full of “sampah” (the inconsumable ingredient which is really annoying). The taste ? Voila! Spicy and sour.True taste of tomyam. And I must say this…really really spicy, even for someone who able to chew raw “cili padi” like me.I’m sweating for it.Incredible (I feel as if my lips are swollen by the end of the dinner due to the spiciness)

The next thing would be the fish. Honestly, I didn’t really like the gravy, it is too sour and I don’t feel it nice with the fish but the fish it self is another story. Mother of all freshness. The texture of the fish is delicate but does not lose the muscle strength yet. The color is pure white and smells good too. And the sweetness really kills you. Authentically fresh to the extend you feel reluctant to swallow it as you want to keep the taste linger around your tongue and stimulating your taste buds all the time.

And then again we have the prawn, I guess I can’t keep on chewing the fish all night long. The black pepper gravy taste extremely good and I keep deeping the fish in the gravy to aspire greater taste and if I said the fish is fresh, fresh is understatement for the prawn. Sweet, firm texture (unlike days old prawn) and full prawn flavor at every bite. As I’m writing this article, I feel hungry imagining the sweetness taste of the prawn. How could I erased that from my memory

Last but not least of course would be the Kailan Ikan Masin. The kalian are not overcooked and the “ikan masin” are salty but yet not too salty to drive your blood pressure up.Great.I love it so much. By the end of the day, we are too full. Darn we cant even move. Oh ya, I forgot to mention this, the table is the “Japanese” style table (knee length) so we got to laze around at the hut(due to the sitting position).(They even provide thai style pillow/mattres for us to sit on top)Due to the drizzle , the sea breeze are very obvious though we are quite far from beach. Hey I’m not complaining!!!. What better to accompany us rather than good inhale cigarette smoke and a cup of black hot coffee? I am so dazed now, am I working or in holiday ? hmmmm…..

All in all the dishes cost us RM 104.20.Slightly on expensive side(it is only for two) but worth every single cents of it. For my colleague, this is his first time indulging himself into this kind of luxury and he was extremely excited. Enjoying every moments of it.(he even took picture of all the dishes to brag around with his other colleagues….)Well, welcome to my world. J

On the way back we find out that actually the tour guide recommend the restaurant next door. Hahahah, make me wonder how good is their neighbor?

Me : “Second round mate?

Isa : Are you out of your mind ?. I could last a week…

Me : hahhahahaahahahhahahahhahah
