Run, Hilda Run!

Hilda pressed her temples with her fingers.

I don’t like this. I don’t like it at all. She thinks.

Who would ever like it? The pain. The agony. The sadness. The tears that came with it. But it’s not like she could help it. It’s like totally out of control. Once it gets to her head, it will wash over her entire body making her whole body sort of locked into its place, like she can’t do anything, like she’s helpless. She knows too well that it’s not just the pain and all of other emotions that are going to bother her. The body is not just protecting itself from the pain inside. It’s protecting itself from more pain coming from the outside. Naturally, when that happens she refuses to eat, sleep and sometimes she refuses to even move herself. Locked, in place.

She knows this set of emotions will not pass soon. Sometimes it drags on to weeks or even months until it settles itself and then Hilda will be calm again. She tries to control the pain from spreading to her body, from taking over her. But as always, it never worked. At last, the pain washed through her – taking control of her. Hilda removed her fingers from her temples and crossed her hands it in front of her body like protecting it from bursting and tearing her apart as she clutches her waist. But she just couldn’t bear to hold it in. It’s just too much to feel in a set of emotional rush and in one fleeting moment she was on the floor – on her knee – with her hand supporting her body as tears streaked down her cheek onto the floor. Hilda tried to reach for her medication on the bedside table but…

No! She thought.

I won’t let this happen to me again! I must gain control!

So she pushed herself up into a standing position and once her hands are free, she clutched her waist again. Hilda staggered towards the door and down the stairs with one hand on the wall supporting her while the other still clutching her waist. Finally, as she reached the front door she yanked it open and stepped outside. Hilda squinted at the sunlight as she started walking slowly towards the road. Once she knows that her body is steady she started walking faster and faster and she started running. She wanted to run, run away from all those sets of emotions as far as she can and towards a happier place where she will not have to lock herself from all the pain, where she will be able to fight back.

Along the way, Hilda stumbled but never stopped. Tears kept pouring down her cheek and whenever her vision was blinded by it she would wipe them away only to be replaced with a new set of tears. But it didn’t matter to her. She just kept running and running, to a place where she will never have to break down ever again – where the misery can never haunt her again.
