Many years ago, many long years ago, this planet was once filled with lush greenery and vast open blue skies. If you were just a tiny comet passing by this planet, you could see how majestic and beautiful it once was. As you soar through the stars, you would feel inferior to the very magnificent site of this blue world. Now, should you return to this planet, you would only be confused for you might mistake our planet for Mars. Did you perhaps not fly close enough to our planet and perhaps thought you’ve only reached Mars? No lonely comet, you have arrived where you wanted to be just as you always do every 75 years or so. Except now the planet you once thought was beautiful has turned ugly.

Yes you have arrived at Earth if you’re still asking yourself and no, you should not feel excited over it. After all you yourself knew this would eventually happen but because you believe everything will turn out well and that all problems will eventually fade through time, you thought that our planet would remain clean forever. But no, you were mistaken. Nothing remains forever. Not even you, mighty comet. All things come to an end eventually, just as how our planet is slowly coming to that. If I could live forever, then I’d be God.

The year is now…wait, now that I think about it, I can’t remember exactly what year this might be. Civilization ended decades ago, no one keeps track of anything now. Everything as far as the eye can see, looks dead and barren like our neighbouring planet Mars. How is it that we superior beings of Earth have made so many blunders to cause this mess? We are no better than animals, nay worse than that. We are lower than animals since we destroy things. Animals on the other hand hunt to restore balance to the circle of life. We have become bacteria to our planet. Are you listening? Oh yes I forgot, you’re dead too and lie buried under a mass grave. You and all the other foolish humans died when the planet started to die. Now only so few of us remain. As I await my time, let me continue with this story my dead friend.

Everything that we have taken to build our civilization has returned back to the earth in the form of sand and dirt that I now rest my toes in. We took so much out of the planet for the glory of fast development. We went to such great lengths to seek greater fortunes that we kept on exhausting our planet’s natural beauty. Now that there is nothing left, where do we go from here? In my case, the only I can do is keep on walking and never stop. Farewell my friend, I shall visit you soon.

. . .

As I left my friend’s dirty tombstone and walked in an aimless direction to an unknown destination, I saw something that I thought I would never live to see ever again. Textbooks had pictures in and often wrote greatly about them. As I approached closer to it, I knew it was not a mirage. Up ahead, a little green seedling with its two tiny dark green leaves sprout out of the dirt of our mistakes. So tiny and fragile and yet I finally get to see another colour. The tears in my eyes would not stop flowing. Such a waste of fluid; the sapling could use it more than I.

The little plant is like a sign that there is still time to act. I still have my arms and legs. With my will and my wit, it will not end here. No matter how deep I get thrown into the cavern of our mistakes, if there is but a single piece of thread left, I will grab it and pull myself out of this cavern. So long as this human heart beats, I shall never give up till I’ve completed my goal or die trying. Just you wait and see and Mr.Comet. The next time you visit our planet again, you’ll see how beautiful it is.
