Souffle..what ?

Restaurant : Bangkok Jazz

Where : Chulan Square, KL

Again this is my adventure with my Germany guest, Dr Fritz Hoyer…77 years old, grumpy and surprisingly energetic old man…he aint got any disease on him except some minor tennis shoulder…This old man still working his ass off at this age…damn…

Well the story begin with a weak before he came down, me and ever petite, hot and beautiful good friend, Abigail wanted to go to Jazz bar but had to cancel it due to some miscommunications with some other friends.

So a weak later when I am supposed to bring Dr Hoyer for dinner, I am still craving for Jazz and then I saw that restaurant…The Bangkok Jazz…but hold up.What has Jazz got to do with Bangkok.I never heard that Nat King Cole been there in his life ??? Hmmm…lets check it out

Situated at Chula square, nearby Jalan Bukit Bintang, the buildings is actually a row of eateries with wide range of varieties from local to international cuisine…Meanwhile the Bangkok Jazz is located at the middle corner lot of the middle building, the whole area offer you a great dining experience and you can park your car at ease amid the bustling and chaotic traffic at Jalan Bukit Bintang.Of course with a nominal fee.

Entering the Bangkok Jazz, you will be amazed with the ambient and decorations. Consisting of two floors, the ground floor is a bar with nice sofas and tables with  dim lighting .Guest will be entertained with the hype and beat of Jazz where frequently international and local act will perform and displaying their individual unique style Jazz performance. The ambient is cozy and posh and will become electrifying when the performances start. Really nice place to “chillax” (A new word I learn from a friend - Chill and Relax)

The first floor is the dinning hall consisting of two part, Indoor and outdoor. The outdoor is constructed to look like a verandah thus giving you a great dining experience while listening to the sound of the city settling dawn at dusk. Great view as well.

Well how on earth that Bangkok and Jazz are related here? It is a combination of Jazz music background and Thai cuisine offering in one posh place. It is just a marketing gimmick but it work well to me and I believe to most of my fellow best friends.

We ordered to their well mannered waiter who ever ready to provide us with excellent customer service and as I always love it, keep on pouring water in our glass….Great. Oh well, I do get distracted, ok …continue with the ordering.

Well, I ordered myself Chicken in Taro Basket and Dr Hoyer order for himself Seafood Soufflé and both of us ordered a plate of rice. For the drinks, as I was thirsty, I just ordered plain water and for Dr Hoyer, he goes for beer (typical Germany)

When the foods come, I am really impressed with the presentation. It looks really good. I should have take some picture but unfortunately my phone camera is damn too lousy. And for the taste, well the one thing that I notice is that all the food that we ordered has this very nice aroma. It smells good, the kind of smell that will suddenly create void in your stomach with a  strong vacuum suction urging you to feed in the food as soon as possible…

The rice is made of fragrance rice which partly explained the aroma, and taste good as well. I am not big fan of rice, but really it taste good. The temperature is just nice, (slightly warm which give great sensation in your stomach when you swallow it) and the texture are soft.

The chicken are served in a basket made of taro (I have no idea what the heck is it) in which the taro are fried and shape so that it could hold the chicken. Yes, the taro is consumable (I love to eat the taro and mix it with the sauce from the chicken dish). The chicken is a stir friend chicken with a lot of other ingredients such as capsicum, sweet corn and other vegetables that I have problem to identify. It is cooked together with perhaps soy sauce and other kind of sauce which resulting black color thick sauce covering the chicken and the vegetables. The taste, well exquisite. Again the aroma helps. It is slightly salty and sweet as well with a little bit mixture of spiciness. All in all it tastes good.

For the seafood soufflé , it is actually a fancy way of naming “Otak Otak” as it look and taste more less the same. The only different was that the fish paste was in very small bowl as container, and in the middle of the soufflé there a piece of prawn which tastes so fresh. Well what can I say, I always love otak otak and this taste more less the same. But perhaps due to the method of cooking ( I believe they steam the fish paste instead of grilling it like otak otak) thus the fish paste is very moist , and soft.

All in all, the combination of fresh prawn, exquisite taste of succulent fish paste, and refreshing aroma from the soufflé has at last produce an effect that has bring good taste of otak otak to the next level. OK, I take my words back…it doesn’t taste like otak otak…it taste ten times better than your normal otak otak .

We chill out at the restaurant for a good two and half hours. No we didn’t eat that long but the restaurant is so cozy with accompanying soothing Jazz music make you feel so relax and wanted to enjoy the ambience longer.

All in all cost us only RM 56.30 and I am surprised, quite cheap considering the “posh”ness of the restaurant and the great customer service provided. I will definitely come back…

4 ½ Star – Not fair to give more than that as I didn’t get to try other food yet but I do highly recommend you to try it out.
