Time, is a funny thing. They say we are in control of it. Sure proper time management gives us extra time for us to do whatever we please but really, it is time that is in control of us. Humans are not immortal beings which is why we are subjected to the power of time or should say I fate? Science constantly searches for ways to extend our fragile human life just so that we may increase the time we have on earth. Millions of money poured into the development it and yet a simple knife to the back and that’s the end.
As I peer outside my dust stained apartment window, I look upon what was once a metropolis of man’s greatest achievements and man’s mistakes. The will to buy and own is the undoing of us. People kept on buying things that they don’t even need which causes the country to spend more to resupply those things to keep the populace happy. Now look at us. Our city, once known to be one of the greatest in the world is now a pile of dirt and in ruins. You could say consumerism was the cause of the Great War. After all we constantly require all sorts of things to keep us alive for we are dependent on them.
Imagine your car runs out of fuel and the government has increased the price of fuel so much that people begin rioting because of the discomfort they’ve been put through. Political leaders act desperately to make everyone happy and begin searching for alternatives. They look upon their neighbouring countries, booming in wealth but more importantly, resources. They wish to open trade but due to the indifference that both countries have no sign of negotiations could be established.
With the growing populace with its demands growing ever more like a spoiled child and the economy heading for a bad turn, the government goes into chaos and in acts of desperation – war is release. If you won’t give it to me, then I’ll simply take it from you. With such a mind-set, both countries go to war. One trying to keep its people happy and the other defend its own wealth. Allied nations rush to help and eventually more countries and engulf in the cycle of hatred. War keeps spreading and sometimes we take it too far and forget our moral values or why we even went into war.
War is meant to be on the battlefield where generals can play with their toys but then all of a sudden, bombs start dropping on civilians. The people are terrified and enraged. They want revenge which fuels the war to greater heights. Hence more bombs are dropped on people but in other countries. It didn’t take long before most of the major nations were a part of the Great War. Technology allowed us to extend our lives a little more but it also creates weapons of mass destruction.
When a mushroom cloud was seen in a city of another country, I knew there was not much hope left or time left for the matter. People gathered in Times Square to mourn our fallen by lighting thousands of candles on the plaza floor, each candle to represent a life. People gather round to feel its warmth on a day so cold. But when a strong gush of wind sweeps through blowing them out, they fall back into misery but then a child shouts out.
“Look mommy, there’s still one left.”
For some reason that one candle rekindled the hopes in everyone. It was as though all hope is not lost. More people gather round to protect their last hope so that it may not be blown out. Eventually the war ended, but at what cost?
I look upon my dust stained window and look below to find a city in ruin due to human greed but I look above the vastg blue sky to see that there is still hope for us all.
